Procrastination - The Big Dream Killer

While a coach can never guarantee the success of any client we work with, I think we can all 100% guarantee one thing: Procrastination will kill your dreams.

Every week as I coach clients, present seminars, and work with people who say they want to improve their lives, I am amazed by how often good people who know exactly what they need to do choose to do absolutely NOTHING.

Let me break this down to its simplest form through the following sample discussion:

Coach: So what do you think you need to do next?
Client: Well I think I need to do step 1, step 2, and step 3.
Coach: That's great, now you have a plan, so are you going to do it?
Client: No.
Coach: But didn't you say these are the things you need to do?
Client: Yes.
Coach: I don't understand. If these are the things you need to do, why are you not going to do them?

And this is the point where the client starts to rationalize their procrastination, without realizing that as coaches, we hear the procrastination excuses all the time... we can see them a mile away. They are the reasons like this:
- Its not the right time.
- I don't have enough time.
- I don't have enough money.
- My boss(wife, husband, spouse, dog, couch) won't let me.
- I need to think about it more.

“In a moment of decision,
the best thing you can do is the right thing to do.
The worst thing you can do is nothing.”
Theodore Roosevelt

As Roosevelt says, the best thing you can do is the right thing, but doing nothing should not be an option. Some will try to argue that "thinking about it more" is doing something, but I contend that all you are doing is trying to think of a better way to justify doing NOTHING. If you know you need to do something take the Nike approach and "Just Do It".

As a coach there are few things more rewarding than helping a client get into a state of ACTION, making things happen and moving forward. If you know you need help to get moving, find yourself a coach to make it happen.

It is important to understand the real reason that people procrastinate. According to renowned author and speaker Denis Waitley:
“Procrastination is the fear of success. People procrastinate because they are afraid of the success that they know will result if they move ahead now. Because success is heavy, carries a responsibility with it, it is much easier to procrastinate and live on the “someday I’ll” philosophy.”

Its OK to be successful, and its OK to start being successful today. Waitley and others often talk about the need to individuals to overcome their fear of success before they can begin the path to success.

Are you afraid of being successful?

Do you believe that you couldn't possibly live an enchanted life?

Do you believe that you have already reached your full potential?

These are tough questions to ask yourself, and some of you are ready to move to another page on the web without even answering. For those who have already left this page, success will never come. For those of you who are still here, go back, re-read the questions, and take some time to consider how you feel about each of those. For those of you who take those steps, you just moved closer to the success you are looking for.
